Dr.Malti Mehta (a.k.a. Dr. M & M) is a board certified psychiatrist. A little bit about Dr. M & M, she was born in the small town of Dabhoi in Gujarat, India. She has led a life marked by resilience, determination, and a commitment to community service. After a series of relocations in her early years in India, she immigrated to the United States in 1974 following her marriage in 1973. Breaking stereotypes, she graduated from medical school at the young age of 21 and pursued a residency in general surgery, defying societal norms that expected women to specialize in fields like obstetrics/gynecology and pediatrics.
Upon moving to the U.S., she successfully passed the ECFMG exam, entered the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute for a residency in psychiatry through NIRMP, and subsequently passed her flex exam. Settling in Charlotte in 1979, she became a mother to four children, including two doctors and two IT professionals, and later welcomed two granddaughters into her life.
Her professional journey began in the early ’80s, where she devoted herself to mental health facilities as a Medical Director. With over 40 years of service to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), she is an active member of numerous medical associations, including the Charlotte Psychiatric Association, Southern Medical Association, AAPI, GCAPI, Mecklenburg Medical Association, and Medical Auxiliary.
Beyond her medical career, she is deeply engaged in social and cultural activities. A coordinator within the Vaishnava group and two senior groups at the Hindu Center, she participates in dancing, singing, karaoke, bridge, yoga, drawing, embroidery, and various crafts. Actively involved in political activities, she has organized numerous fundraising events for various candidates.
Her commitment to community extends to volunteering work with seniors, health fairs, and charity walks for heart and cancer awareness programs. Engaging with various temples, including BAPS, Jain, Gurdwara, and Trimurti, she served as the treasurer of the India Cultural Forum and currently holds positions such as regional director in AAPI, GCAPI BOT member, vice president of B J Medical College, and board member of the Rays Foundation.
