Rasheen builds his confidence with Friends of the Children – Charlotte

Rasheen has a passion for animated creations. He is always seeking new information on science. His favorite pastime is dancing – he is always trying to do the latest TikTok dances. Rasheen lives in one of Charlotte’s oldest public housing neighborhoods and lost his father to gun violence. He lives with his mother and stepfather; both are active in his life. Rasheen was recently diagnosed with an intellectual disability and struggles with self-confidence. He often feels he is not smart enough and that friends are constantly making fun of him.

Rasheen is part of our Friends of the Children – Charlotte program. His mentor regularly reinforces that Rasheen is enough and reminds him about making good choices with selecting friends. This year Rasheen and his mentor worked on basketball drills, focusing always on what he did well. His performance improved such that he played all year on the school basketball team. They continued this focus on the positives throughout everything, including academics. Rasheen will be promoted to the next grade after passing his EOGs with flying colors.

‘By keeping the focus on what Rasheen can do, his self-confidence has rocketed and he has enjoyed several successes.’ ~ Rasheen’s mentor
