Family Centered Treatment helped Ezra and his mom build a stronger relationship

Family Centered Treatment helped Ezra and his mom build a stronger relationship

Ezra is an aspiring basketball player. He is also a talented artist and competitive video gamer. Ezra struggles with feeling rejected and different. He was adopted at an early age by his mom, a single, white female. Ezra has an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis that adds to his feelings of being different. His three siblings remain in his birth mother’s custody. Ezra shows his hurt and frustration through outbursts like fighting, property damage, yelling obscenities, self-harming behaviors, and threats of physical violence towards his adoptive mom.

Despite years of therapeutic services, Ezra’s behavior became so severe that mobile crisis and the police were called multiple times. The family was referred to Family Centered Treatment (FCT) as a last option before hospitalization. Initially Ezra was not engaged, but eventually he began to share and communicate his feelings. The therapist helped Ezra and his adoptive mom to have difficult conversations in a productive way. Since completing the program, Ezra’s behavior has improved. He feels more understood, his relationship with his mom is improving and he is doing better at school.

‘We started feeling hopeless. It has been hard, but we have felt fully supported and are now much closer and stronger.’ ~ Ezra’s mom
