PRTF - Psychiatric Residential Treatment

The Thompson Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) for children diagnosed with mental illness provides an intensive clinical setting within the safe, child-friendly living environment on our Saint Peter’s Lane Campus in Matthews, NC.

The healing process begins through interactions with trained and committed Thompson staff, including individual psychotherapy sessions with licensed therapists and a child psychiatrist.

PRTF is intended for boys ages 5-13 and girls ages 5-12. However, boys may turn 14 and girls may turn 13 while in the program.

  • Extremely low staff/child ratios
  • 6 children per unit, each with their own bedroom and bathroom
  • Evidence based practices
  • Trauma Informed Agency (Risking Connections curriculum agency wide)
  • Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (participation in the Duke TFCBT Learning Collaborative)
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Relationship based theoretical model
  • Nationally accredited: COA and The Joint Commission

  • Clients who wish to be considered for the Thompson PRTF program must meet the following criteria:

    • Must not be actively suicidal or homicidal.
    • Is not actively using and/or dependent on drugs or alcohol.
    • Must have an IQ above 70 and must not have a TBI or DD/MR classification including confirmed diagnosis of Autism, Asperger’s or other Pervasive Development Disorder.
    • Must not be an adjudicated Sexual Offender.
    • Must have NC Health Choice or NC Medicaid as the primary payer source.

  • The following is an overview of the PRTF Admissions Process at Thompson.
    1. Contact NC Thompson Admissions at 1-888-293-6216 to check for availability.
    2. Send Thompson Admissions the following documents so that the review process can begin:
      • Thompson’s PRTF application (download here).
      • Comprehensive Clinical Assessment written within the last 30 days recommending PRTF.
      • Psychological Evaluation written with the last 2 years that details an IQ score of 70 or above.
    3. Please note: Additional documents will be needed prior to admission. However, the documents listed above are required to start the admissions process.
    4. Once the required documents are received, the admissions committee will provide a response within 48-hours, at the latest.
    5. If the client is approved by the Thompson admissions team all required paperwork will then be submitted to the appropriate Managed Care Organization (MCO). The MCO has 1-14 days to provide a response to Thompson.
    6. If approved by the MCO, the admissions team will confirm the time and date of the admission and follow-up about any remaining paperwork that needs to be completed.
